Thomas E. Unger, Ph.D.

Background: Dr. Unger received his Bachelors degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton Phi Beta Kappa and his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. His theoretical orientations are Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Therapies practiced for 30 years with adult individuals. Specialty areas are anxiety, depression, worry, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsiveness, stress/anger, marital conflict, and personal effectiveness. Past experience includes serving as Director of the Southtowns Counseling Center and providing evaluation and referral services for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Modalities: Individual therapy and Cognitive Skill Training

Specialties: Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, of brief duration whenever possible, is utilized along with on-going evaluation of treatment effectiveness. Active treatment components of psycho-educational reading and homework assignments are always used to increase therapy efficiency. Efforts are made to educate clients about the importance of obtaining sufficient treatment to reduce relapse occurrences. Services are provided for:

Methods of Payment–We accept many insurances and forms of payment:

  • Independent Health, Community Blue, all Blue Cross plans (that pay directly, not by submitting to another company), NOVA, Excellus, Medicare, all Medigap Plans including AARP
  • We do accept HSA and Flex Benefit cards at the time of service.
  • We accept all of these plans according to the terms of your contract with the insurance carrier.
  • We do not participate in EAP benefits.
  • Payment is due at the time of service, in the form of cash, check, money order, HSA or Flex Benefit debit cards.  We do not mail personal bills, bill parents or spouses, schools or the workplace.  We do bill your insurance company on your behalf.

Candice P. Unger, B.S.N., M.S.

Mrs. Unger is a psychiatric nurse who received a BSN degree Cum Laude from University at Buffalo, and Masters Degree in counseling from Niagara University. Additionally she earned a degree in Information Systems Management from SUNY College Buffalo. She has served on the faculties of the schools of nursing at University at Buffalo and Niagara University. Prior to co-founding Buffalo Psychology Group, she was Head Nurse Manager of the Psychiatric Inpatient Unit and of the Partial Hospitalization/ Psycho-social Rehabilitation units of the Buffalo Veterans Administration Medical Center. She is licensed in New York as a Registered Nurse, and as licensed mental health counselor. Her interests include fitness training, hiking and following her kids’ careers.
